The Knox County Sheriff’s Office announced on Sept. 19 a warning to residents about a new phone scam in which callers claim that a loved one has been jailed and can be released with an ankle monitor if money is sent through online payment apps such as Venmo or PayPal.
The alert is important because it highlights the growing use of technology by scammers to target community members, potentially leading to financial loss and distress for families.
According to the announcement, the Sheriff’s Office emphasized that it will never request payment through online platforms for bail, ankle monitors, or any legal process. Residents are urged not to send money if they receive such calls. The office advised people who receive these calls to hang up immediately, contact their loved ones directly, and report the scam to law enforcement.
The warning comes amid increasing reports of similar scams across various communities. Authorities stress the importance of staying vigilant and spreading awareness among friends and family members.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to remain cautious and help protect others by sharing information about this scam.
