Tennessee defeated LSU 4-1 on April 4 at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, tying the weekend baseball series. The Volunteers relied on strong pitching and timely hitting to secure the win.

The outcome is significant for Tennessee, as it helps the team recover in Southeastern Conference play and positions them for a potential series victory.

Freshman pitcher Cam Appenzeller played a key role, delivering five shutout innings in relief. After allowing a single to his first batter, Appenzeller retired the next fifteen batters consecutively. He struck out six without issuing any walks and earned his fourth win of the season. Tennessee head coach Josh Elander said starting pitcher Tegan Kuhns delivered “a gritty performance that put the Vols in a position to win” after Kuhns was struck by a line-drive single but remained in the game.

The Volunteers took an early lead in the first inning when Blake Grimmer’s ground ball got past LSU’s first baseman Zach Yorke, resulting in two runs. In the third inning, Grimmer hit a home run to increase Tennessee’s lead to 3-1. Jay Abernathy added an RBI double in the fourth inning for further insurance.

Kuhns pitched four innings before leaving after walking a batter in the fifth; he allowed one run on efficient pitching with just one strikeout over 69 pitches. Appenzeller has been effective throughout conference play this season, maintaining an undefeated record and holding opposing hitters to a .150 batting average across four appearances.

The series will conclude Sunday afternoon with both teams seeking to claim victory in this three-game set.
