Three University of Tennessee student-athletes have been awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, the organization announced in late April. The recipients are Martin Espernberger and Nick Stone from men’s swimming and diving, and Lauren Jarrett from women’s track and field.
The NCAA announced on April 22 that it awarded $10,000 each to 42 student-athletes as part of its Postgraduate Scholarship program. These awards recognize winter sports athletes across all three NCAA divisions for their academic achievement, athletic performance, and leadership within their communities.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship program was established in 1964 to support graduate education for accomplished student-athletes. The selection process considers athletic and academic achievements, campus involvement, community service, and leadership. According to the release, all nominees are considered fairly regardless of sport, division, gender or race.
Nick Stone is a three-time Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll selection who is pursuing a degree in sport management. He serves as co-president of Tennessee’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was named to the SEC Community Service Team earlier this year for his volunteer efforts. Stone achieved top-10 finishes at the SEC Championships in diving events during his senior season.
Martin Espernberger has earned two College Sports Communicators Academic All-American honors and was named SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s swimming and diving in 2024. He holds a school record in the 200 butterfly event with a time of 1:39.34 and represented Austria at the Paris Olympics where he finished sixth in that event.
Lauren Jarrett joined Tennessee after transferring from Wisconsin-La Crosse where she won nine national titles at the Division III level between 2023–25. She set Division III records in both the 60-meter (7.29) and 100-meter (11.23) sprints before surpassing those marks at Tennessee with times ranking among national leaders during her first season on campus.
