The University of Tennessee-Knoxville Hattie Named SEC Diver of the Week, Set to Compete on International Stage

Tennessee junior Bryden Hattie earned SEC Diver of the Week recognition Tuesday thanks to his impressive performance against No. 4 NC State over the weekend, the league office announced.

The Victoria, British Columbia, native swept the springboards with a pair of career-best scores. Hattie won the 1-meter with a nation-leading 404.55 score and posted the top mark on 3-meter at 424.65, the second-best score in the country and best in the SEC this season. Both performances ranked inside the top 10 in Tennessee history, as the 1-meter score was good for sixth, while his 3-meter mark ranked ninth.

"Honestly, Bryden has improved a lot during the last few years," diving coach Dave Parrington said following the meet against the Wolfpack. "He made big strides during the summer with Team Canada, but that was also building on what we worked on previously. He's diving at a very high level, and he's leaving to compete at the World Cup in Germany this week. He is doing some great stuff. I couldn't be more pleased. He's conducts himself like a pro, and that's starting to pay dividends. The true test is when we get to the championship season."

On his 1-meter list, Hattie nailed his final two dives for a combined 142.08 points, scoring a 72.00 on his Forward 2 1/2 Somersault 1 Twist Pike and a 72.08 on the Inward 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck. Three of his six dives on 3-meter eclipsed the 70-point margin—highlighted by a high-scoring Reverse 2 1/2 Somersault Pike that netted a 78.75 mark.

This marks the second time this season and fourth time throughout his career that Hattie garnered the SEC weekly honor.

After a busy summer slate on the international scene that saw him compete at the World Championships, Commonwealth Games and FINA Diving Grand Prix, Hattie will represent Canada at the FINA Diving World Cup in Germany this week, competing on the 3-meter and 10-meter synchronized diving.

Up next, Tennessee has a short turnaround with a road meet at 10th-ranked Louisville on Thursday, October 20, at 2 p.m. ET.
