WASHINGTON, D.C., – On May 25, U.S. Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02) voted in favor of the HALT Fentanyl Act, which passed the House. This legislation would make the temporary class-wide scheduling order for fentanyl-related substances permanent. Fentanyl-related substances' current Schedule I classification is set to expire later this year.
The HALT Fentanyl Act classifies fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs under the Controlled Substances Act. The legislation also guarantees practitioners are able to research fentanyl-related substances to gain a better understanding of its effects on a person's health and better serve those at risk.
"Illegal fentanyl kills thousands of Americans every year. We need to take this crisis seriously and do whatever we can to stop it in its tracks,” said Rep. Burchett. "If this order expires, our police officers would lose authority to get these deadly drugs off the street and our border patrol agents wouldn't be able to seize it as it comes across our border."
